Trainverse

Trainverse (UET-1)

A political thriller set on a train that travels from Lisbon to Laos, through Eastern Europe, Siberia, much of China and Southeast Asia. The train is a moving special economic zone that has to balance its priorities with various legal jurisdictions.

Motion is legal protection. ECOROUTE never stops. Everyone on board is between places.

Stories

The Overloaded Train
Protocolized
The Headless Empire
The train is the only territory where a stateless system can operate.
Signals in the Margins
The train is an institution that can be subverted by the people who serve it.
Each Trainverse story has a defining sentence: "The train is ___." Your artifact gets one more — it must be compatible with the existing four.

The train

The UET-1 is approximately 500 metres long. No one boards or leaves while it moves.

The cars

CarWhat it is
Observation carFloor-to-ceiling windows. Public. The most watched and the most watching.
Dining carShared meals, strangers at table. Involuntary proximity.
Business carEncrypted comms, privacy-filmed windows. Closest to off-record on the train — not actually off-record.
Premium loungeRestricted access. Class distinction made physical.
Car 7Gauge-change car, decon array. Most intensive biometric read point. Known vulnerability site.
Casino car ("Loss and Gain")Documented. Has not yet appeared in a canonical story. Available.

The Toybox

The absolute rules govern every story in this universe. Nothing overrides them.

The Absolute Rules
Rule 1 — The train must be moving. Motion creates the legal fiction the story inhabits. No jurisdiction fully applies, no one can leave. If a story begins or ends at a station, the train must be moving for the majority.
Rule 2 — ECOROUTE is always running. Every passenger wears a bio-band. ECOROUTE is active at all times. There is no moment in which a character is not being tracked. The business car has privacy film on the windows — not privacy from the sensors.
Rule 3 — Stopping is a jurisdictional event. When the train stops, it becomes subject to the laws of wherever it has stopped. Local authorities can board. Gauge change stops (Dostyk) are mandatory 60–90 min dwells — the most legally exposed moments on the route.
Technology
Bio-bands — broadcast compliance status continuously: green through black. Cannot be removed without flagging. A black band does not mean dead — the system has decided not to see you.
ECOROUTE — monitors all 2,347 passengers, reconciles against 17 jurisdictional databases, maintains behavioral scoring with retroactive capability. New information can change a past score.
The Pono — institutional memory device issued to security personnel. Runs as multiple simultaneous instances. "Nothing of note" is legitimate Pono language — and the phrase Murkin used to protect the refugee boy.
Mirage Handler — a Cold War routing protocol never removed (removal requires 47 vendor libraries and 12 ministerial approvals). Stepan repurposed it: soup recipes with routing codes in the margins, moving people through gaps in the surveillance grid.
De-Realized Zones
Caduceus DRZ — Belgrade–Sofia corridor. Pharmaceutical compliance zone. Bio-band identity resets on entry and exit. The ECOROUTE record shows no gap — but the content is gone.
Zoothesia DRZ — ~220 km west of Astana. Neutral Forge Protocol Authority. Perceptual classifier: objects and persons exceeding the compute threshold are withdrawn from perception rather than resolved. They continue to exist. Passengers are not notified of zone entry.
The Constraint
Your artifact gets one defining sentence: "The train is ___." State it in your Google Doc. It must be compatible with the four canonical sentences.
